Mandated Reporters

Some Virginia professionals and occupations are designated as mandated reporters and are required by law to immediately report suspected abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation to APS.

Who is considered a mandated reporter?

Certain professions are required by law to report suspected abuse.

Any person licensed, certified, or registered by health regulatory boards (except veterinarians), including:

  • Physicians and nurses
  • Licensed professional counselors
  • Pharmacists and technicians
  • Nursing home and ALF administrators

As well as:

  • Law enforcement personnel
  • Emergency response service providers 
  • Homemaker, chore, companion, or personal care providers
  • Guardian or conservator of an adult
