
Local departments of social services offer homemaker, companion and chore services, but spots can be limited based on funding.
What are homemaker, companion, and chore services?
Companion Services: May include light housekeeping, companionship, shopping, meal preparation, transportation, laundry, money management, and assisting with activities of daily living.
Chore Services: May include non-routine, heavy home maintenance, minor repairs to furniture or appliances, carrying coal, wood, or water, chopping wood, snow removal, yard maintenance, and painting.
Homemaker services: Instruction in or the performance of activities to maintain a household, such as personal care, home management, household maintenance, nutrition, and consumer or hygiene education.
Who is Eligible?
- Adults who may need home-based services
- Adults who may need services to delay placement in a residential setting

Submit your completed application to your local social services office.
A copy of the application is also available at your local department of social services (and they can help you fill it out). It can be completed by the person seeking services or by someone acting on that person’s behalf.
Eligibility for services are determined based on need, the availability of the services and any financial requirements that apply.
Right to Appeal
If you have applied for, or are receiving home-based services, and disagree with an action taken by the local department of social services, you can request an appeal. You must request the appeal within thirty (30) days of receiving written notification of the action with which you disagree.
