Pursuant to § 51.5-154 of the Code of Virginia, the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Commission is responsible for “[developing] the Commonwealth’s plan for meeting the needs of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and their caregivers, and [advocating] for such plan.” The Commission published the first Virginia Dementia State Plan in 2011, and has updated it every four years since then. The current plan covers the period 2024-2027 and addresses six goals:
- Statewide Coordination of Services and Efforts,
- Dementia-related Data,
- Training and Education,
- Coordinated Care for People Living With Dementia,
- Dementia-related Research, and
- Brain Health and Dementia Risk Reduction.
The Plan includes 110 strategies to address these goals.

Virginia is a recipient of Building Our Largest Dementia Infrastructure funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) via the Virginia Department of Health to implement the national Healthy Brain Initiative. The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Commission and DARS are partners in this effort. The funding requires the development of an Implementation Plan and a tracking dashboard. The Implementation Plan includes 63 of the Dementia State Plan’s 110 strategies.
The Dashboard is updated quarterly. If you would like your dementia-related work to be included in the Dashboard, please fill out this form. We look forward to including a wide range of activities by outside organizations in the Alzheimer’s Commission’s annual report to the Governor, the General Assembly and DARS.
