Joe Quainoo’s Journey from Project SEARCH to Mary Washington Hospital

In this episode of the VR Workforce Studio, hosts Rick Sizemore and Betsy Civilette spotlight the inspiring journey of Joe Quainoo, who moved from internships in the Project SEARCH program to a full-time job as a transporter at Mary Washington Hospital. Joe shares how his daily work involves assisting patients with compassion and care, while also handling important tasks like scanning wristbands and updating charts. His story highlights both the practical skills and the empathy that make his role meaningful.
Joe explains how Project SEARCH, a program offering a series of hospital internships, gave him the training and experience to succeed in employment. Rotations in supply chain operations and patient transport helped him discover his strengths and prepare for permanent work. He credits the program with giving him the skills and confidence to pursue his goals.
Joe’s mother, Rose Frempong, adds a parent’s perspective, describing how she has seen her son grow more responsible, independent, and socially engaged. Vocational rehabilitation counselor Erin Hudgins echoes this, emphasizing how Joe’s dedication and motivation made his transition to work seamless, while also showing the broader benefits of vocational rehabilitation for families and communities.
