The Commonwealth Council on Aging (CCOA), established pursuant to §§ 51.5-127 and 51.5-128 of the Code of Virginia, promotes an efficient, coordinated approach by state government to meeting the needs of older Virginians. The CCOA promotes accessible, livable, and age-friendly communities.

Best Practices Awards: Request for Nominations

The Commonwealth Council on Aging is pleased to announce the request nominations for the 2026 Best Practices Awards. The deadline for submissions is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026. Please review the Instructions and complete the Nomination Form. The Council thanks Dominion Energy and AARP Virginia for its ongoing support of this initiative. A list of previous winners and a brief overview of their programs are available for 2017-2025, and 2006-2016.

Purpose
& Duties

The CCOA is charged with:

  • Examining the needs of older Virginians and their caregivers and ways in which state government can effectively and efficiently assist in meeting those needs
  • Advising the Governor and General Assembly on aging-related issues and policies
  • Advocating for and assisting in developing the Commonwealth’s planning for meeting the needs of Virginia’s growing aging population and their caregivers
  • Assisting and advising the Department on strategies to improve nutritional health, alleviate hunger, and prevent malnutrition among older adults
