Some Virginia professionals and occupations are designated as mandated reporters and are required by law to immediately report suspected abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation to APS.
Who is considered a mandated reporter?

Any person licensed, certified, or registered by health regulatory boards (except veterinarians), including:
- Physicians and nurses
- Licensed professional counselors
- Pharmacists and technicians
- Nursing home and ALF administrators
As well as:
- Law enforcement personnel
- Emergency response service providers
- Homemaker, chore, companion, or personal care providers
- Guardian or conservator of an adult
